Blogging Buddies Has Come to an End

May 20th, 2015 No comments

Our weekly blogging buddies has now come to an end.  It has been a great experience for the kids, Ms. Patterson and myself.  I am hopeful that the new and excising teachers in Grade Four will continue with the buddies next year.  I am very grateful to my blogging buddy, Ms. Patterson.  She was open to the idea of Blogging Buddies from the start and has added insightful ideas throughout the year.  I enjoyed benefiting from her organized nature (she would have our ideas posted and in a Google Doc before I returned from our planning meetings).   I also am grateful to have had the opportunity to watch Ms. Patterson interacting with her students.  She is warm, direct and challenges them to work to their abilities.

I will take what I have learned about co-planning/teaching with Ms. Patterson and incorporate it into my experience in Grade Five.

Thanks Jona!

The Titanic

April 28th, 2013 13 comments

Ever wondered how heavy marbles are? Ever wondered what gets heavier in water? That is why science is all around us. Science is all about thinking and problem solving.

Our goal was to construct a floating device that can carry at least 25 marbles or more. We used the following materials: bottles, tin can, saran wrap, plastic plate, tape, egg carton, popsicle sticks. We decided our experiment was to stick paper, card board and cotton on three different sides. We all know these materials absorb water which makes them heavy. We thought that it was cotton and we were right. I am proud of our process and outcome because we were creative. Although we didn’t have enough space to add marbles so marbles started falling out and now we have upgraded and improved our device so we can succeed our goal.

What we did was we was taped 4 plastic water bottles together like a raft, we added 1 more on the side weight distribution. Afterwards we put a tin can on a plate and secured it with saran wrap. Then we taped that on the raft and we were ready to go.

We added marbles to our device and watched how the device sank deeper and deeper as we added more marbles. The marbles made our device weigh more and more. The device was filled with marbles that were solid and heavy, so the device sank deep enough so that the water reached the top and then the whole thing sunk.It is all about the amount of water that is pushed away (displaced) by the object and gravity.

The conclusion is that the device floated because it was airy, and also due to the force of gravity.

It is so interesting that the Titanic was so heavy and it didn’t sink I wonder why, don’t you?
